Comments are more respectful at Flickr than Deviantart. Plus you will soon realize that most Deviantart people usually comment on the same people over and over again and do not pay attention much to other people.
I'm a paying subscriber with DA. I've tried flickr. The interface is that of a children's website. The names of certain features are really unprofessional and immature. For instance: the "interestingness" feature. Overall, if you're looking for a more professional art website, chose deviantART. There's just so much more diversity. Not to mention the adCast feature. It will get you discovered fast, as for flickr it will take a new user weeks to even get a page view. And the deviantART community is just great. To me flickr is more of a candid website. DeviantART is a diversified website. Not to mention it launched in 2000, and flickr launched in 2004.
With a great multi-image uploader, clean UI and a white bg, Flickr is the best way to display art. On DA its the exact opposite: a horrible green bg, crap image uploader along with a terrible UI. Flickr launched 4 years after DA, yet Flickr kicks DA's behind in terms of traffic and usage(as per compete.com, Flickr gets 4 times the traffic on DA! ) I guess the people have already made it perfectly clear which is the better service. IMO the only reason why DA still exists is because hardcore DA users have an already established network within DA which cannot be migrated to flickr overnight.
Sometimes. ;-)
